DESCRIPTION
Abitiamo insieme Ascoli is a residential project that was completed in 2010 by Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Ascoli Piceno , which as of 31 July 2012 decided to include it among the initiatives in the Fondo HS Italia Centrale, which was already active in the territory. The intervention is particularly aimed at helping young couples and young families to start living independently, offering them affordable rent apartments for up to 12 years. In addition, it offers communal spaces destined for free time, getting together and socialization that the future residents have to commit to sharing, managing and keeping alive.
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
The project Abitiamo Insieme Ascoli was realized inside a historic building which at one time was home to the boarding school-convent of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Bambin Gesù, situated in the town centre of Ascoli Piceno.
The building is made of travertine limestone, which is typical of the historic town centre. The intervention aimed to bring life back into the historic town centre, which had been in a state of abandon due to the high cost of renovating the buildings.
For this reason, the objective of the project was to bring to life a genuine community of residents that was capable of adding value to the social environment not just of the apartment complex but also of the neighbourhood and the whole town. To this end the portico and the convent’s former chapel were designated as communal spaces to be managed by the residents’ association.
COLLABORATIVE LIVING

The collaborative residential services were designed during an organized series of group meetings that involved the residents of the building and the local associations who were interested in the project. The main purpose of these meetings was to support the start-up of activities aimed at the town and, at the same time, to support the needs of the new community to share the residential project. Through a participatory process, the community gave life to two different sets of rules:

  • the “Rules for the Management of the Building and the Self-Management of the Communal Spaces and the Collaborative Residential Services” which govern the self-management of the collaborative residential services and the communal spaces as well as the management of the building and of the assigned dwellings,
  • and the “Community Pact” that sets out the rules of living together as a community and which was drafted by the residents themselves through a collaborative process.

During the design and planning meetings, the residents chose to constitute a residents’ association (AIA) to manage the communal spaces in the building both when they are being used by the residents themselves as well as when they are in use by external parties (who have the possibility to hire the rooms by the hour and for brief periods).
